Do testers need to be technical?

This is one question people often ask me during conferences and interviews.

Here is my answer to it

Ask yourself this question is, “why do you wanna become technical?”

Here are some things you want to think about.

  1. What is your why? Why do you want to become technical? Is it because other people said so? Is it because you want more money? Is it because you wanna understand the code better? Is it because you wanna move into a development role? You need to find your why, get some clarity, and why you wanna become technical.

  2. Are you trying to become technical for your own growth so that you can participate in code reviews, you can start writing some code if needed. Maybe it could help you understand the requirements better from a code perspective. So that could be a reason why you could become technical.

Another thing to think about is, whether would it be more valuable to you being a technical person.

Again, this has multiple factors surrounding it.

The point is, even if you're non-technical, you can still be valuable.

In summary, if you think you'll be valuable as a technical person, figure out the reasons that would relate to that. And then you could figure out what technical path you wanna be.

So those are some things you really want to think about when, you're planning to become more technical.
